The Moravian Chamber Choir (MKS)
The Moravian Chamber Choir (in Czech Moravský komorní sbor, or MKS) was founded in 1998. It carries on both – the rich musical heritage and the tradition of choral singing in the Moravian region (with its centre in Ostrava city), and the professional duality of the Ostrava Janáček Philharmony Choir. The Moravian Chamber Choir has forty members, both male and female, including renowned performers from professional and semi-professional ensembles. It specializes in a wide range of musical genres. In addition to performing classical choral concert works, oratorios, masses, passions and cantatas by Czech and foreign composers, the choir also sings adaptations of folk songs and spirituals. Most of the choir’s performances are in its home province of Moravia, where the choir is also a regular guest ensemble at festivals and concert cycles (e.g. the Janáček May, Janáček Hukvaldy and Concentus Moraviae music festivals).
The artistic director of the Moravian Chamber Choir is Professor Lubomír Mátl, who for many years was the choirmaster of the Philharmonic Choir in Bratislava and Ostrava and the head choirmaster of the Prague Philharmonic Choir (affiliated with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra). Professor Mátl has collaborated with a wide range of internationally acclaimed conductors including V. Neumann, W. Sawalisch, S. Baudo, H. Rilling, R. Mutti, C. Abbado, L. Bernstein, L. Pešek and J. Bělohlávek.
